CERN Accelerating science

Editorial - May 2014

Dear Colleagues,

Although still in full swing of the preparation of the next round of data taking, due to start early next year, the LHC experiments are more and more intensively looking into the future. Therefore, this issue of the PH Newsletter is focused on their upgrade programmes, in particular the Phase 1 upgrades that will be installed in 2018/19.  The major upgrades of ATLAS and CMS to cope with the increased luminosity of HL-LHC machine upgrade will take place later, in Phase 2. However, they already have earlier upgrades planned.

For ALICE and LHCb, the Phase 1 upgrades are very substantial, and have recently started going through the approval process at the LHCC. The current status is explained in this Newsletter. Other articles include the annual report of the DT group, and an interview with the PH Departmental Safety Officer Mark Hatch.

I wish you pleasant reading.
