CERN Accelerating science

ATLAS: discovering a giant

How did you decide to apply for the summer student programme?

The first time I heard about this summer student was... at CERN ! I came here to visit some experiments with my University and I learned that there is this amazing opportunity to spend two months studying and working at CERN. I have been here twice with my University. The first was for visiting and the second for taking some engineering lectures about accelerators physics. These two times at CERN remain great memories, and I really wanted to come here once more... It seems that my wishes are coming true !
As a physicist, I think  that I have a strong background in theoretical physics. However, I think I'm lacking computing skills... but I'm working to improve them thanks to the help of my supervisor !

Tell us a few words about your project.

I'm working on ATLAS, and specifically on boosted VH analysis. My supervisor suggested me to work on this, slowly but in detail and he suggested that eventually we might be able to improve some of the tools of the libraries used for ATLAS analysis. Furthermore, if we finish on time we might consider doing some work on Higgs analysis... But we will see, how far we can go. As I said, we shouldn't try to rush in having some results. In that way one can also appreciate and fully understand this wonderful physics.

Is your experience so far close to what you were expecting?

My experience was far better than expected. If it was possible, I would like to stay longer. Indeed, even after the end of my contract, I plan to continue to work on this project. It's really interesting and I'm learning so much that it would be a waste to end it so soon.

Would you like to spend more time at CERN continuing with your research?

For my future, it would of course be a dream to be able to work here. But it also seems that it is difficult... and each year it becomes more and more difficult.
So, yes, in a perfect world, I would like to work here, in this amazing atmosphere and at the state-of-the-art of particle physics... Nevertheless, I think that it is more realistic to say that in the future, I will probably be working on data analysis, not at CERN, but with the CERN. But... who knows, maybe I will be able to come here again !

From my time as a summer student at CERN I will certainly remember...

I will miss everything of course! The lectures, the people, the place, the project, my supervisor... and the Restaurant 1!

So many countries, so many way to think, so many languages, so many diversity...

This is what I will remember the most ! Of course, visiting the LHC experiments, Geneva, the Jura... were a lot of great moments. But the most beautiful part around CERN is not the landscape but the people working at CERN.
