CERN's 2015 Latin-American School of High-Energy Physics

The 8th CERN – Latin-American School of High-Energy Physics will be organized at Ibarra, Ecuador, from 4 to 17 March 2015. The School, which is held every two years, is intended mainly for young physicists from Latin America in the final years of work towards their PhDs in high-energy physics, or engaged in post-doctoral work, but it is also open to students of phenomenology. The idea of creating a School jointly with Latin America, modeled on the European Schools of High-Energy Physics, was based on CERN's long-standing commitment to promoting and extending the availability of educational and cultural benefits through co-operation with both developed, and developing countries. This year’s school is organized jointly by CERN, Geneva, Switzerland, and CIEMAT, Research Organization of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science; and a team of local organizers from institutes in Ecuador.

Lecturers at the forefront of their fields from Latin America, as well as from the rest of the world, are invited. There will be around 32 lectures, each lasting about 90 minutes, with additional time for questions and discussion. In addition, there will be discussion sessions, of about 90 minutes, most afternoons during the School, with individual Discussion Leaders mainly coming from the Latin-American physics community. The students are encouraged to present and discuss their work at a poster session during the first week of the School.

Demand for attendance at the CERN – Latin-American School of High-Energy Physics exceeds the number of available places, so a competitive selection is made based on information provided on the application form and the letter of recommendation from the candidate's professor or supervisor.

It is believed that these Schools will continue to be an important element in the formation of the future community of high-energy physicists in Latin America and its integration into the world-wide family of particle physics.

The applications deadline is 14 November 2014.
