To me, this has been a humbling experience and the greatest journey of my life in search of understanding the truth in science and belief. I have never imagined in my wildest dream to be working among the top and the greatest people in the science industry. As a matter of a fact, this is the first time i have been studying in abroad country and it has taught me a lot about living independently, self discipline and to be contented with what i have been dearly miss back in my country.
How did you decide to apply for the summer student programme?
I heard about the program when my supervisor sent me an e-mail with the Invitation letter from the Malaysia's Ministry of Higher Education. I had no idea about the summer student's program, not until I went to a particle physics and nuclear physics workshop organised by the Malayan University in Kuala Lumpur. The workshop was held for 3 days and during this workshop I learnt basics principles about particle and nuclear physics, ROOT and MCNPX programming as well as introduction to CERN Summer Student Program by the last year's participants. Deep in my heart, I had never expected to get the part in this year's program because there are hundreds of applicants with good grades and physics knowledge that I think would fit for the work that is undergoing in CERN. As soon as i received the good news, I was over the moon and excited as i my dream of becoming a part of CERN's family ring has finally became true and i am proud to represent my country and hope to perform my best for the benefit of science and mankind.
What is your previous background?
I have no background in particle or nuclear physics. I received basic physics education in high school as well as in pre-university program. During my undergraduate, I studied mechatronics engineering and I am now currently pursuing my masters in electronics engineering.
Tell us a few words about your project.
I am currently working on two projects. One is to design a macro for calibration of tile detectors in HCAL purposes while the other one is to study the effects of ionizing radiation damage on FPGAs. Originally I was assigned under one project only, the macro design project. However, as a master student of the electronics engineering, I have high hopes in working with electronics related project; which i can be used to include into my masters thesis and do well in the area. Plus, I need engineering related works as my university requires me to make a presentation of it in front of engineering students. Hence, I sent a request to Anca the non-member state coordinator. But she could not do much to help me. Luckily, my lovely supervisor, Dr.Paolo Rumerio agreed to help and he managed to place me to another project which was closer to my interests. As far as I can say, both projects are important for the future development of both CMS and the super LHC.
Did you have time to visit/travel outside CERN?
Yes. A magnificent visit to ALICE, CMS and the globe. I wish I could attend all workshops and visit all detectors' site. The thing I will cherish the most are my friends and our adventures across the Switzerland boundaries. I learnt so many things about the culture, the food, and the people of Switzerland as well as its neighboring countries.
From my time at CERN I will take...the good lectures, the wonderful hospitality, the delicious food (although it is a bit expensive for a student like me), the site visits, other summer students and most importantly, my supervisor, my research group and those who have helped me during my stay here at CERN. Thank You so much CERN for having me and thank you God and Malaysia for giving me this wonderful opportunity.
