CERN Accelerating science

From Robotics to CERN and back

Let me introduce my self. I'm Imre Nagi, but you can call me Imre. I am an undergraduate student from  Bandung Institute of Technology majoring Electrical Engineering (specialization in Control Engineering). Okay, it will be better if I answer all of your questions. But please note that my english writing is not too well, but I'll try to make you understand and enjoy my story below.

I never believed that I would be a part of summer student in CERN. I never known about cern before until one of my friend made a post in a facebook group of my robotics club. He said that CERN was opening  a registration for summer student programme. I tried to find something about cern from google and I found that cern is a biggest world nuclear research. I think this is the best time for me to expand my networking with the other students and engineer from the whole world. Without knowing what will I do in CERN, I tried to register this programme.

I joined Alice-DAQ group and Dr. Barth is my supervisor. He is the nicest and smartest person I have ever met. Unfortunately, I am not working on a control engineering or electronics engineering project. I got a computer science project because by that time there was no project about electronics in Alice-DAQ. My supervisor told me that I will work on making a website for the Data Quality Monitoring in ALICE.

The website function is for the AMORE database editor and for changing file configuration of agents in ALICE detector. I have to make several website pages using a new programming language (for me), e.g. php, javascript, html, mysql, etc. Come on man!! I will never learn how to make a website or how to be an architect of a software. I knew how to program a robot but now I was feeling lost. For most part of my project I had to work alone although I wish I would finish my work in a team. But I think the show must go on.

I was given with a specific project and I had to accomplish it. It was my responsibilty to finish my work and prove that an udergraduate student like me can do his work.  I spent my first week learning these language and I started my project on the second week. Fortunately, I finished the functionality of the website on my third week so I can move to a new project in the next week. This is my fifth week and I have almost finished my second project. This is the best part of being a summer student for me because I was motivated to show a well performance as a student from Indonesia, my beloved country.

Just a little bit about the lecture. I didn't get many things from lectures on the Standard Model Physics and all the theories beyond the Standard Model. I can't understand many things about the physics analysis because I never had a lecture on these things before in my life. There were so many formulas to understand :)  On the other hand I loved and understood several lectures like Nuclear Physics, DAQ and Trigger, Physics Accelarator, etc.

Actually I dont have any plan to continue my research at CERN because I want to move on with my projects in robotics, especially in humanoid robot soccer. In the future I would like to join a huge robotics company like ABB Robotics or Boston Dynamics.

I really enjoy the swiss summer. I always find several interesting place in Geneva. Geneva is full of history. It is the best city I've ever visited in my life. But unfortunately, I can not go to another city in Switzerland as everything was too expensive. But, overall I enjoy my summer here. May be I can have another time here by my family :D

If you ask what I will remember as a summer student here, I will answer the parties and how much students used to drink,  something that I didn't experience back in my country. Besides, I will also remember about several visit to the LHC detector and my supervisor and his friends in the ALICE Daq team.

Overall, I loved being a CERN summer student. It was a great opportunity for me. Thanks for this change.
