How did you decide to apply for the summer student programme?
The first time I heard about CERN was when I was in high school (2007- 2010). I remember thinking: "I want to go there someday." After high school I continued studying physics in the University of Oulu (Finland). In sum- mer 2011 I had chance to visit CERN: my partner was doing his Master's thesis here at CERN Library. I met many people and asked them how to start a career at CERN. One girl told me to apply as summer student once I graduate as Bachelor of Science. After that I read about Summer Student programme from multiple web pages and I decided to aim at CERN. When I nished my Bachelor's thesis it was time to apply.
Tell us a few words about your project...
I am working in CMS collaboration, searching for degenerate Higgs bosons. I am implementing an algorithm in order to understand if the peak we saw around 125 GeV is actually more than one peak almost on top of each other.
Your experience at CERN (and CERN) is/was close to what you were expecting?
It was exactly what I expected: meeting new people, having good conversations, learning and working a lot. What impressed me the most were my supervisors. I could not have hoped for better support and teaching.
Did you have to study for your project before getting at CERN?
Yes, I studied one article before I arrived.
Did you enjoy the Swiss summer
I did enjoy the Swiss summer, especially all the activities there are. I travelled to Lausanne, but I spent time mainly in Geneva.
From my time as a summer student at CERN I will remember...
New friends, great conversations and unique atmosphere!
