I had heard about CERN's summer student programme in the Physics Department of my University. I discussed with some friends from my university who have previously been here as summer students. I thought this will be a precious experience and maybe important to my possible future research career. Therefore I decided not to miss the chance and went to an interview that was organized in my department.
I am currently a second year undergraduate student under a 3-year curriculum. I have never been to CERN before but I have always been interested in particle physics. I think that this programme offers a wonderful opportunity for students to start working in the field of high energy physics.
Once I arrived and start working in my project within the ATLAS group I realized that there were many things about the LHC before that I didn't know before or at least I wasn't so familiar. From the lectures programme and my project I finally learnt many things.
The project in which I am working is about setting an upper limit for the Bs -> mu+mu- branching ratio. The work I have been doing is mainly on data analysis. I should mention that the computer programming skills and statistics knowledge I have learnt from the project will probably be very useful for my future studies and research.
As expected, CERN is a place with brilliant people from around the world from whom I learnt a lot. The visits to the detectors were really impressive. It is hard to imagine an apparatus that is so huge but at the same time extremely delicate.
I met some PHD students here with whom I got a chance to travel around Geneva. The view from the S. Pierre Cathedral and the double rainbow seen under Jet d'Eau was fascinating. We have also been to Bern to visit places like Einstein's House. I would certainly like to spend more time at CERN and I hope that I will have the chance in the future.
