CERN Accelerating science

Minhaj Uddin Ansari

I was one of the only two students from Pakistan selected for the CERN Summer Student Program and this was one of the greatest moments of my life. When I arrived at CERN on June, I was amazed to see the vastness of the facility and I was even more excited to meet the people that worked in it. Scientists form all over the world came together for the progress of science. I chose the 13 week program under my supervisor, Mr. Sameed, and I was admitted in the ALPHA Antimatter experiment. Since my major was computer science, I was scared my background wouldn't match up with the physics-centered environment at CERN but soon enough I realized that people from all backgrounds were playing an equally important role in their experiments. This made me feel welcomed.

My project was to trap anti protons using a Linear Quadrupole Paul trap because the ALPHA team's main focus of research is the properties of antimatter. My project was really interesting, even for a computer scientist like me, because of all the help I got from my supervisor and people around me who worked at CERN. Along with my project, I got to meet some very cool people and travel to some really cool places like London, Barcelona, Paris, Venice, Rome, Zurich, Munich, Frankfurt, Lucerne, Interlaken, Chamonix, Annecy, Nuechatel and Lauterbrunnen.

I really loved the time I spent at CERN and I would highly recommend anyone who wants to spend a productive summer to apply for the CERN Summer Student Program. Don't hesitate, just go for it. You never know, maybe you'll be here as well in the summers.
