CERN Accelerating science

Developing software tools for nuclear spectroscopy

I was born in Bratislava. I'm currently student of Faculty of Informatics and Information Technologies of Slovak Technical University in Bratislava. I love sports, especially Wing Chun, the martial art that I train, weight lifting, swimming but many other sports as well. I like to hang out with my friends and play games with them such as chess, monopoly and many others. I collect postage stamps and minerals.

How did you decide to apply for the summer student programme?

I have learned about summer student program from my colleges on Department of Nuclear Physics of Slovak Academy of Sciences, where I work on software development. After consulting with them, I  decided to apply for the program.

What is your previous background?

I work on development of software which purpose is to assist physicist with data analysis in field of nuclear spectroscopy. Thanks to these experiences I had good general knowledge about physics programme of the LHC although I have never been to CERN before.

Tell us a few words about your project.

As a student of computer engineering my choice was quite straight forward. My interest in effectivity and architecture of software started in my first months of studies in university. My objective is to develop tool to measure performance of WinCC OA (PVSS) in different environments. This will enable dynamic and flexible development of high performance control software as well as quick and effective diagnostics of performance related problems in this program.

Is your experience so far close to what you were expecting?

My experience is better than what I have expected. There are many local events and students make a lot of additional activities, which makes this experience pleasant and interesting. Working environment is positive and work is interesting with many opportunities to visit and see interesting places and people. LHC experiments are quite impressive, although the most impressive thing is probably, that so many different people from so many different cultures and countries got together and built something as complex and complicated as the LHC and all the experiments.

It would be very interesting experience to continue working on experimental software development for longer period of time. Considering given time and complexity of software that is being used here my overall contribution is limited.

Did you have time for travelling around Switzerland?

After work there is always time to do other activities like swimming or go to Geneva with friends. At weekends there is more free time to travel around a bit. At weekends I enjoyed extended trips to Geneva and surrounding areas.

From my time as a summer student at CERN I will certainly remember...

I will certainly remember the first time I saw the ALICE detector with my eyes and the complexity of this project. The brightest memory however will most likely be meeting young physicist and future engineers which make great friends and colleagues.
