CERN Accelerating science

A word from the Deputy Head of the EP department - March 2023

Dear Colleagues, dear Members of the EP Department and CERN Users,

It’s my pleasure to invite you to the reading of the spring edition of the EP Newsletter.

The way this fantastic wealth of results and achievement is springing forth really reminds of spring time.

This long list of articles can be sorted, for example in the following way: There are several stories about detectors and systems that have been upgraded during LS2 and are now being run in, such as large parts of the LHCb detector, the TOTEM detector and the IRRAD facility in the PS area.

Talking about LHCb, we also have to mention the VELO. Good times and bad are sometimes not far apart. LHCb’s VELO, a piece of jewellery in many respects and one of the highlights in the previous edition of the EP Newsletter, will need to have its RF foil replaced at the end of the year as this was damaged following a failure in the LHC pressure control system. Luckily the detector itself was not damaged.

Then we have reports about detectors that are in the middle of the preparations for the LS3-upgrades, e.g. the ATLAS TileCal, the CMS ECAL electronics and the validation of the 8-inch Silicon sensors of the CMS HGCAL. These impressive reports prove another time that the word upgrade is just a misleading belittlement.

And finally there are several exciting stories about new experiments, new measurements and new results that underline the diversity and exceptional productivity of CERN and the HEP community.

Enjoy reading!
